Sooboog to Take Place in 2015 Roman Consul Stakes

October 1st, 2015

Sooboog posted an impressive win in a minor sprint at Rosehill Gardens on Wednesday, but co-trainer Michael Hawkes has confirmed the three-year-old will take his place in Saturday’s Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

Sooboog stamped his claims as one to watch from his very first appearance on course during the 2014 Spring Carnival, but was particularly disappointing upon resuming this time and running seventh in a Gosford minor in which he jumped as a $1.10 favourite.

Having finally broken through for a maiden race win in the TAB.com.au Maiden Plate (1100m) on September 2nd before repeating the dose in the Cellarbrations BM70 (1100m) on Wednesday, Hawkes told AAP that while out of character for the team to expect such a short back-up, the horse is in the right condition for success in the 2015 Roman Consul Stakes.

“It’s unlike Team Hawkes,” Hawkes said.

“But we always thought about the Roman Consul there. He’s done super and the horse looked a picture in the yard.

“He’s drawn barrier one, so as long as he pulls up fine he’ll be there Saturday.

Tommy (Berry) rode him patiently and that’s the last thing I said to him – keep him relaxed and let him do it all for you.”

Sooboog won a talent-rich trial at Randwick prior to his competitive debut last year, and immediately announced himself to the Australian racing community when second to subsequent Golden Slipper champion Vancouver in the Listed NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) on October 4th.

Having again trialled well in the lead-up to his return in late autumn, Sooboog was rated a leading chance for success in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) but failed to match the late pace of Furnaces and finished sixth.

Confirmed to be partnered by Tommy Berry and allocated the rails draw, Sooboog will carry a very-manageable 56.5kgs in the 2015 Roman Consul Stakes.

Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering the best 2015 Roman Consul Stakes odds, for which Sooboog can be taken at a particularly generous quote of $26 for success.
